skycruiser i'm right there with you on the Vanish line. I tried it when it first came out and i did not like it one bit. I had the same problems you had with it. Same with the Stren fluorocarbon . The only fluorocarbon i even remotely like is the bass pro XPS one. I tried Pline fluorocarbon once and that stuff was the was the weakest line i have ever used. 12# test busted like nothing, i could set the hook on a 12" fish and snap it. Not good.......

I use the palomar knot for just about everything mono or braid. Its plenty strong enough to get the job done. Ive never tried the double palomar but i will give it a shot.

I found that PowerPro frays less quickly than fireline, i.e. less tendency to get "fuzzy" as quickly.

i like braid for many applications, like casting, jigging on smoth seas, or working in higher current situations, since the lower diameter/lb test cuts the water better.

I find that Mono is superior in some situations.

Any time you need low vis (more than just your fluoro shock leader)

When you are fishing in high seas, it is good to have your line being caught by the current, because it keeps tension on the line at all times. With braid in bigger seas, you have a harder time keeping the slack out of your line when the boat is on its way down.

I like mono for trolling. I think that having stretch in the line increases your hook sets % over braid on the troll.

I like braid for cerain species, and mono for others

braid is better for fish requiring a quick hookset, like Tog, Porgies, winter flounder.

mono is better for weakfish...less ripped lips

etc....
