Fishing line

Fishing line

Postby Dave's not here » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:08 am

I finally splurged this year and purchased a $12 spool of "fancy" line for my spinning reel. In the past I've used 8lb-12lb monofilament; last year I upgraded to 10lb flourocarbon; however, after discovering numerous frayed areas on the more expensive flouro, I decided to try out Berkley's Fireline this season. (Sorry if this is beginning to sound like a testimonial.) From now on, until some new fishing line technology is developed, Fireline is the only line I will use.
After hanging up on some underwater obstruction while fishing this morning I resorted to my usual remedy of applying steady pressure on the line until either the hook straightens, the snag shifts, or the line snaps. Well, the line finally broke. As I retrieved the end of the line to tie another bait this is what I found...

This is 10lb Fireline still attached to the eye from a jig head.
What are your favorite fishing lines, and do you have any experiences to share about their durability/reliability?

I have been using Power Pro braid lately and liking it. It gets ice crystals and becomes difficult to fish with in below freezing temps though.

power pro and suffix performance braid on all my baitcasters. A little spendy up front but the strength and lack of memory give it twice the lifespan of mono. I use flouro leaders and found that the knots tend to slip on the braids, albright knots work best for me.

It also helps to back it with 10 or 20 yards of mono because the slickness of the super lines cause them to slip on the spool with a real hard, swing for the fences hookset.

As far as icing up, try blakemore's "Reel Magic" line conditioning spray. I give my spool a quick shot before and after each outing and definitely notice the difference.

I too find the Albright the most easy knot.
Below is a link to an animated albright knot.

Heres an excellent tip. A drop of instant super glue on the knot once its pulled tight.
It doesn’t matter to us.

I noticed the line slip with the Fireline also. Even though it was recommended in the directions (who reads those?) to back with mono, I spent fifteen minutes unspooling, loading a mono backer, and respooling the last time I used my Big Game rod.
I also noticed that my leaders were not holding onto the Fireline. I mainly use blood knots for this, and have never experienced this problem with any other line to leader application. I'll try the albright and see if it's alright. Thanks for the tip.

I use both Mono and braid. They both have their time and place. For braid i still like the original spider wire. They don't make it anymore and once my stash runs out i need to find a replacement. So far the only other braid i like so far is the Stren super braid. For mono i use Suffix siege, its really tough. One thing i have never liked ab out fireline is all the little black fibers it flings everywhere. Every reel i have put it on had always been filled up with that stuff after a few months of use.

Dave's not here try a double uni knot for tying a leader onto braid. It works really well.

I have used 16/65lb & 18/80lb power pro on my flathead reels for years with a 40lb mono leader. If you take care of the line it will last about 3 seasons. If the line is showing wear you can just strip it and re spool it back on in reverse and its like new. Having the zero stretch with the super braid lets you detect light bites and also get a more solid hook set than you can with stretchie mono.

Knots are very important with super braid lines because of their slickness. I prefer the simple and super strong Polomer Knot. I use a mono backing any time I use a super braid line.

I have been hearing good things about Suffix lines and will check em out next season when I need to re-spool.

I have never personally like the fire line due to it being more of an oval shape than round which gives off a line vibration if using in current.

i made the change from mono to floro this year. i tried berkley vanish 8lb because a customer of mine swears by it. i broke off more times than i can count. that line was shitty as hell. i got some off brand floro, triple fish i think and i love it. it's sensative as hell, which is critical for the soft bite this early in the spring.

i tie a reverse clinch knot. it's super easy and strong as hell. i think i saw something on TV that polamar knot was the strongest knot

I seem to have good luck with the Spiderwire in all different applications and I use the uni-knot for everything.
