Killer Striper fishing today

Killer Striper fishing today

Postby capnmickey » Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:33 pm

I fished today in Trenton with my buddy Rick "Archie" Roche and we had an absolutely stellar day. We boated over 30 (!) Stripers to 25 lbs and left them biting. The herring were so thick you could probably walk across the river on them and we had an easy time making bait. The action was pretty much non-stop from 6am until noon. This was one of those days that only comes along once in a long while. Archie had the biggest fish at 39 inches and we released them all to swim another day.

If you plan on fishing the river in the Trenton area, know the rules and regulations. We were stopped and checked out by 3 different agencies today, the Trenton police (who wanted $25 to use their ramp, unbelievable), the NJ state police marine patrol, and NJ Fish and Game, who checked us for licenses, herring limits, circle hooks, and illegally kept Bass. Obviously we were in compliance with all the above but I think a lot of tickets were written today from what I could tell. Just a bit of advice.

Check out some pics and video.

Nice fish Captn.

Where do you hook on the herring? Through the mouth or back. I'm thinking with all that running water you would put the hook through the top of the mouth.
It doesn’t matter to us.

Mickey, when they're checking for circle hooks...... is that all you're allowed to use? Haven't heard of a regulation on hooks before. Hey everyone else, Is this common anywhere else?

Some Barbless regs. but have not seen any circle hook regs?

The way Mickey unhooked the one in the video so easy you can see the benefits to the fish.

It's circle hooks only in the river, these fish are there to spawn so it makes sense. Out of all the fish we landed today, only one was gut hooked and even he swam free relatively unharmed.

Sparra: We hook them through the top jaw.

Looks like fun!

Circle hooks are a must if you are C&R fishing with bait. Kinda sucks having "the man" hassle you but its also nice seeing there are people out there protecting our resources.

Trenton is on fire right now\ 4/15....myself and moose traveled down to the stadium and cut up some chunks of herring and sat around and waited for the sun to drop behind the trees. Man that out going tide is amazing 9 Bass on 2 herring cut into chunks ...fish finders and circle hooks ....on 460 slammers 7ft rods .....I love the spring run......the other captain had it correct we where checked for saltwater regs circle hooks ...3 hook zabiki rigs.....EVERYTHING.
The Russian guys next two us racked up around $600 dollars in illegal fishing activities.

The tide will be great this weekend high in the early evening with an outgoing pull from 9-1!!!
That same tide last year caught me the largest stripper on the Delaware ever .....set your drag
