Stripe Bass fishing in San Francisco/Marin County

Stripe Bass fishing in San Francisco/Marin County

Postby p-niz » Mon Sep 27, 2010 3:12 pm

I just moved to the Bay Area and was wondering if anybody familiar with the fishing here would happen to know some good spots to fish... I am not looking to go out on a boat, although I have one, but rather fish from shore??? Suggestions would be helpful.

Hey!

I Lived in SF for about 8 years, so I have been down that road.
If you are strictly talking Marin for Stripers, I would use plugs/cranks, and especially the local favorite, Hair raisers in the Bay shoreline, Napa, and Petaluma Rivers when they are running. (Basically a Bucktail jig with a grub on the hook) White, White/ yellow, White/chartreuse, and White/ red are the most popular colors.

I LOVED fishing the entire Marin coast both in the Bay and the Pacific, but the bay is your best bet for specifically stripers, SF Beaches and south to Pacifica, the East Bay, etc... are the place to be sometimes... just depends on where they are in the run, of course. PM me if you have specific questions... I could go on and on about CA fishing...

You should definitely check out the Web Site and forums for Pier Fishing in California... awesome resource.
Created by Ken Jones, the author of the book Pier Fishing in California, now in I believe its 3rd Edition. I strongly recommend buying and reading that too.

Also check for reports on NorCalKayakers report forums for reports on where and when the fish are running.

Also, much more boat oriented but LOADED with useful resources and fishing reports is the Coastside fishing Club website and forums:

Mud!

Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I try to stick to fishing in the bay, for some reason I have an aversion to surf fishing. I guess I was spoiled by growing up in eastern North Carolina. I got a great, light Sage spinning rod at 75% off at this store in San Rafael and a shimano stradic reel. I've been having pretty good luck with with the "bass assaisin" grubs and white shrimp Gulps. I've found a great spot, believe or not, behind the Maseratti/Ferarri dealership in Mill Valley when the tide is coming in. I've also been going out by Hunter's Point where I don't think the inhabitants there have ever seen a white man.

Thanks for the tips and have a good one.

nice...

Yeah I know the western sport shop well... I used to work in San Anselmo, and passed it every day on my commute. I know the whole shoreline you described behind the dealership... good stuff. When they're there, they're there!

There's all sorts of people out there in hunter's point... but you don't want to be in certain parts of it or bay view at the wrong time for sure.

They have at least seen this honky.. I used to go there a lot.

I don't understand the connection between growing up in Eastern N.C. and not liking surf fishing... the surf fishing is epic on the outer banks!

I love fishing in the Bay. If you are into kayaks, I strongly recommend getting out there to fish on a yak... it's freaking fantastic. If you don't know how to kayak, don't go into San Francisco bay until you do ;o)
